Masojídek, Jiří

Main Research Areas

In the Laboratory of Algal Biotechnology, his work is focused primarily on applied research of mass cultures of microalgae. His activities include monitoring the correlation between photosynthesis and the growth of microalgae cultures to select suitable strains and adjust their cultivation regimes, as well as the development of laboratory and outdoor cultivation systems.
The selection of microalgae strains is based on their potential application as food and feed additives, e.g., for aquaculture (due to their high content of carotenoids and unsaturated fatty acids), or as strains producing bioactive compounds for use in agriculture (biostimulants, biopesticides).
Applied projects focus on the use of microalgae biomass in fish aquaculture, as biostimulants and biopesticides in agriculture, and on wastewater remediation as a nutrient source for growing microalgae.

Scientific Career

From 1977 to 2006, he worked in the Laboratory of Photosynthesis as a research scientist, where he focused on basic research of the structure and function of photosynthetic membranes in microalgae.
Between 2006–2011, he was the head of the Laboratory of Algal Biotechnology, where he continues to work as a senior scientist. He is also a professor at the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, where he has taught enzymology, biochemistry, scientific communication, and biotechnology.
Between 2000 and 2011, he was also head of the Biotechnology Department and deputy director (2002–2006) at the Institute of Physical Biology at the University of South Bohemia in Nové Hrady.
He is currently involved as one of the lecturers in the semester course "Algal Biotechnology" at the Faculty of Science of the University of South Bohemia.
In the field of R&D, he is an active participant and consultant in several international projects. He is also a member of the Scientific Committee of the International European Algae Biomass Association.
He has published over 110 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and holds a Hirsch index (H-index) of 38.
He has been an invited speaker at many international conferences in the field of photosynthesis and algal biotechnology and has supervised numerous Ph.D. students.
