Project Description

The Interreg project Plastocyan is focused on the cultivation of cyanobacteria in wastewaters for the production of biomass, from which biodegradable compound - polyhydroxybutyrate is subsequently extracted. This cultivation process leads to the recycling of nutrients as part of wastewater management, and at the same time it allows the production of fully degradable bioplastic usable e.g. in the packaging industry. The aim of this eco-innovation project is to recycle municipal wastewater as well as dairy wastewater via the cultivation of cyanobacteria able to use sewage nutrients and produce biomass containing biodegradable polymers as their storage compounds.
