Development and application of counter current separation techniques for the isolation of astaxanthin esters from microalgal biomass

Astaxanthin (AXT) is the most powerful natural antioxidant. While currently the commercial market for AXT is predominantly via the synthetic route, there is a rapidly growing demand for nutraceutical, cosmetic and pharmaceutic products derived from natural sources, mainly microalgae. In view of this fact the general purpose of the project is to create an effective platform for the research, testing, production and commercialization of isolated astaxanthin esters (AXTe) with a particular focus on AXTe containing long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). This project aims at developing and commercializing counter current separation techniques (CCC and CPC) for the production of these compounds from microalga Haematococcus pluvialis on a larger scale. Another task of the project is to test and verify these techniques under operating conditions to start the production of pure AXTe during the duration of the project. The emerging newly developed separation methodologies and know-how  will be protected by patent. In the course of the project, special attention will be paid to the training of young researchers in the area of applied research and improve their experience in cooperation with the commercial sphere.

Innovative functional food and feed additives and with content of Omega-3 poly-unsaturated fatty acids produced by Trachydiscus minutus microalgae

Ing. Jiří Kopecký, CSc.

Laboratory of Algal Biotechnnology

The project is focused on the formulation, testing, and developing of new types of poultry feed additives and the subsequent preparation and clinical trials of innovative functional food – chicken meat and eggs, enriched with poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and antioxidants. As the source of bioactives, biotechnologically produced eustigmatophyte microalgae with nutritionally balanced composition of PUFA’s and other compounds with antioxidant effects will be used.
