The Laboratory of Cell Cycles of Algae has more than 40 year long history in both basic and applied research. The basic research is focused on the mechanism of regulation of multiple fission cell cycle in green algae. The applied research exploits this know-how to manipulate cell cycle progression and therefore cell physiology. The model organisms employed are the green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Scenedesmus
quadricauda, Chlorella sp., and the moss Physcomitrella patens. We study the algal (and moss) cell cycle
progression by cell biology, physiology, genetics and molecular biology approaches. The research encompasses wide range of overlapping topics related to the cell cycle regulation. The recent projects have been specifically dealing with the effect of light and
temperature, the roles of WEE1 kinase and CDC25 phosphatase in the regulation of the cell cycle, the accumulation and growth affect of rare earth elements on algal cells and the manipulation of cell cycle for a production of energy reserves.
