The library of the Department was established in 1972 after splitting of library collection allocated in algological research laboratories of the Academy of Sciences into the Institute of Microbiology and the Institute of Botany. The library is registered within the National Library in Prague and its location mark is JHB501. The Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic issued the Registration library certificate under the evidence number 5816/2004.

The library represents a base unit with selected collection of publications, which includes scientific and special publications, both national and international provenience in the following topics: biochemistry, biophysics, biology, photosynthesis as well as ecophysiology and biotechnology of algae.

The library provides public information service specified by the law, e.g. free access to library publications by means of interlibrary loan service (ILS).
